- Steve Perry Was Smuggled Onto the Tour: Journey already had a singer, Robert Fleischman, when manager Herbie Herbert heard Steve Perry's demo. Herbert brought Perry on the road, introducing him to Fleischman as the cousin of a crew member, and had him sing at a Long Beach soundcheck while Fleischman was kept busy elsewhere. Perry's first show came in October 1977 at San Francisco's Old Waldorf, to a skeptical crowd.
- Neal Schon Turned Down Clapton at 15: As a teenage prodigy, Neal Schon was invited by Eric Clapton to join Derek and the Dominos in England. He wasn't ready to move, so he joined Santana instead and played on Santana III at 17.
- "Lights" Was First About Los Angeles: Steve Perry wrote most of "Lights" in L.A. before he joined Journey, and the original line was "the sun shines on L.A." After joining the San Francisco band he swapped in "the bay," and Neal Schon says the two of them finished it in about 20 minutes.
