Cultural Facts:

1. Bike Messenger to Label Owner: Before Thievery Corporation, Eric Hilton worked as a Washington, D.C. bike messenger by day and DJ by night, earning about $200 for club gigs. He and his partners scraped together enough money to open the Eighteenth Street Lounge in 1995, the club that would eventually become the physical home of Thievery Corporation and their own ESL record label.
2. Security Job & Homemade Records: Rob Garza was making electronic music on computers and spending his own money pressing small runs of records while working for his father's security company. He walked into Hilton's newly opened lounge during its first week, the two started talking over a drink, and decided almost immediately to try making music together.
3. The Voice of “Lebanese Blonde”: Singer Pam Bricker was also a respected Washington jazz vocalist and music professor at George Washington University. After her death in 2005, Thievery Corporation released one of her final recordings to raise money for charities helping children affected by Chernobyl, giving the voice behind one of their best-known songs an unexpectedly moving legacy.
