Title: The Hi-Lo's With The Frank Comstock Orchestra - The Hi-Lo's In Stereo
Year/Genre: 1959, Vocal Jazz, Traditional Pop, 10/26
Matrix #: OSL-11
Condition: VG (LM) | Members: The Hi-Lo's (N/A)
Cultural Facts:

  1. Built to Show Off Early Stereo: The Hi-Lo's In Stereo was marketed as an audiophile showcase when true stereo LPs were still a novelty. Frank Comstock's orchestra and the group's stacked harmonies gave listeners plenty of separation to hear across the new left-and-right format.
  2. Their Name Was a Height Joke Too: The Hi-Lo's name referred not only to their unusually wide vocal range, but also to the members themselves - Bob Strasen and Bob Morse were tall, while Gene Puerling and Clark Burroughs were much shorter.
  3. They Practiced in an Apartment: Before becoming one of the most respected vocal groups of the era, the quartet rehearsed intricate Gene Puerling arrangements in a Los Angeles apartment. Puerling's dense harmonies later became influential enough to inspire vocal arrangers and groups including the Beach Boys.
