Cultural Facts:

  1. The Only Real Surfer: Despite becoming the band most associated with California surf culture, drummer Dennis Wilson was the only Beach Boy who actually surfed regularly. He encouraged his brother Brian to write songs about the scene he was seeing at the beach, helping turn a family vocal group from Hawthorne into the soundtrack of Southern California youth culture.

  2. Family Trouble: Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson grew up under their father Murry Wilson, whose controlling and sometimes physically abusive behavior became a painful part of Beach Boys history. By 1964, as Brian took greater control of the group's music, the band fired Murry as their manager, creating a major family rupture right as All Summer Long was being made.

  3. Brian Leaves the Road: Only months after All Summer Long, Brian Wilson suffered a breakdown on an airplane during a Beach Boys tour. He soon stopped regular touring so he could concentrate on writing and recording, a decision that eventually gave him the studio time to create increasingly ambitious records like Pet Sounds.
