About the Album:
Somewhere City is Origami Angel’s debut full-length and the record that pushed the Washington, D.C. duo into the wider emo scene. The album revolves around a fictional refuge called “Somewhere City,” a place Ryland Heagy imagined escaping to when life felt overwhelming. Vinyl editions even turn that idea into a physical world with a map of the city. Wikipedia

Cultural Facts:
• Origami Angel is only two people. Heagy handles vocals, guitar and bass while Pat Doherty plays drums, despite the record often sounding like a much larger band. MusicBrainz
• The drums were recorded in a studio, but much of the guitar and vocal tracking was done at engineer Jake Checkoway’s apartment. reverb.com
• Heagy was working roughly 50 hours a week while writing Somewhere City, with Doherty attending school hours away. Heagy used his long commute to repeatedly listen to rough ideas and develop songs in his head. reverb.com
• The record changed the band’s touring draw almost immediately. Heagy later recalled arriving at previously booked DIY shows—including an LA bowling alley—and unexpectedly finding crowds of hundreds of people. reverb.com
• Before Somewhere City was even released, Heagy had accumulated roughly 35 additional song ideas that didn’t fit its concept; many helped form the basis of the follow-up album Gami Gang. reverb.com
