Cultural Facts:

1. The “Cougar” Name Wasn't His Idea: Early in his career, managers pushed John Mellencamp to record under the name “Johnny Cougar,” which he disliked. By Uh-Huh, he was actively reclaiming his real surname, making this album an important step in shedding that manufactured identity.
2. A Farm-Town Anthem Before Farm Aid: “Pink Houses” turned small-town American imagery into one of Mellencamp's signature songs. Just two years later, he would co-found Farm Aid with Willie Nelson and Neil Young to support family farmers.
3. Recorded With His Road Band: Mellencamp wanted Uh-Huh to feel tougher and more immediate than his earlier records, so he leaned heavily on the musicians who were already playing with him live. That gave songs like “Crumblin' Down” and “Authority Song” their rougher, bar-band energy.
