Hendrix took the stage at 8:30 a.m. on the festival’s final day—after nearly half the crowd had gone home—delivering a two-hour set to about 40,000 of the original 400,000 attendees.
His band for the show, Gypsy Sun & Rainbows, was assembled just days before and featured two drummers and a second guitarist, creating a looser, more chaotic sound.
The box set includes the full performance, including his legendary “Star-Spangled Banner,” which Hendrix improvised to mimic bombs and gunfire—an unplanned anti-war statement that became one of rock’s most iconic moments.
