Cultural Facts:

  1. Grace Slick Came Back: Grace Slick had already been through Jefferson Airplane's spectacular rise and collapse when she joined Jefferson Starship. Red Octopus reunited her vocally with Marty Balin, restoring one of the defining male-female vocal combinations of the original San Francisco psychedelic scene.
  2. Marty Balin's Comeback Song: Balin had helped found Jefferson Airplane but walked away in 1971, exhausted by the band's conflicts and lifestyle. He returned as a guest for “Caroline” in 1974, then rejoined fully and brought in “Miracles,” the romantic ballad that became Jefferson Starship's biggest hit to that point.
  3. Papa John Was Nearly 60: Violinist Papa John Creach was already in his late 50s when he began playing with Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, an extraordinary age gap in the youth-dominated psychedelic scene. He stayed with Jefferson Starship into the Red Octopus era, bringing blues and jazz experience stretching back decades before San Francisco's Summer of Love.
