1. Studio Lore: The centerpiece is the 15-minute “Theme from the Movie ‘Manhole,’” an enormous orchestral psychedelic piece featuring players including Jack Casady, Ron Carter, Craig Chaquico, David Crosby, and members of the London Symphony Orchestra.
2. Personal Struggle: Slick survived a frightening 1971 car crash after racing guitarist Jorma Kaukonen on San Francisco’s Doyle Drive, hitting a concrete wall at high speed and briefly requiring hospitalization.
3. Career Turning: Manhole was Slick’s first official solo album and closed out the highly experimental post-Jefferson Airplane period just as Jefferson Starship was beginning to take shape.
