Cultural Facts:

1. Career Turning: Caliente! marked a more polished chapter for Barbieri after his intense avant-garde and Impulse! years, bringing his huge tenor sound into a warmer Latin-jazz setting for A&M.
2. Personal Struggle: Barbieri’s wife and creative partner Michelle died in 1995 after a long illness, a loss that deeply affected him and contributed to a lengthy retreat from performing and recording.
3. Crossover Sound: The album pairs Barbieri’s fiery tenor sax with lush percussion, keyboards, strings, and Latin rhythms, helping introduce his music to a broader audience without completely abandoning the raw emotional attack of his earlier work.
