1. Scene Ecology fIREHOSE grew directly out of the Minutemen’s San Pedro world, with Mike Watt and George Hurley rebuilding after D. Boon’s death alongside younger guitarist Ed Crawford.
2. Personal Struggle The band’s existence was tied to grief: Watt and Hurley had to decide whether to keep playing after losing Boon, their friend and musical partner, in a 1985 van accident.
3. Label Lore fROMOHIO came out on SST during the label’s late-80s indie-rock run, placing the band between punk roots, college radio, and the more open-ended underground rock that followed.
