Cultural Facts:
- Journalist Before Rock Star: Before Dire Straits took off, Mark Knopfler worked as a newspaper reporter and later taught English while playing music on the side. He was already close to 30 when the band broke internationally, unusually late compared with most major rock stars of the era.
- “Romeo and Juliet” Was Personal: Knopfler wrote “Romeo and Juliet” after a failed relationship, turning the breakup into a modern version of Shakespeare’s doomed romance. The song’s bitterness came from the feeling that someone had moved on just as his own career was exploding.
- Springsteen Connection: Making Movies brought in E Street Band keyboardist Roy Bittan, whose piano gave songs like “Tunnel of Love” and “Romeo and Juliet” a much bigger cinematic sweep. His presence linked Dire Straits’ understated British songwriting to the widescreen American sound surrounding Bruce Springsteen.
