The Label Picked the Wrong Single: Warner Bros. first released "Girl U Want," which failed to chart. Florida promoter Kal Rudman then pushed Southern DJs to play "Whip It," it climbed to No. 14 on the Hot 100, and Devo had to move a 900-seat club tour into 3,000 to 5,000-seat halls within two weeks.
-
Energy Domes Came From a Grade School Ceiling: The red hats were inspired by Art Deco light fixtures Gerald Casale remembered from his 1920s grade school. They were vacuum-formed from white plastic and sprayed with Chinese red lacquer.
-
"Whip It" Borrowed From Pynchon and Roy Orbison: Casale wrote the lyrics in one night as an imitation of Thomas Pynchon's parodies in Gravity's Rainbow, and the riff was based on Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman." Mark Mothersbaugh saw it as a pep talk for President Jimmy Carter.
