1. Personal Struggle: Bowie made Low after leaving Los Angeles, where heavy cocaine use, paranoia, and an increasingly unstable lifestyle had overwhelmed him. His move to Europe became part of an effort to escape that environment and rebuild his life.
2. Studio Innovation: Tony Visconti used the Eventide H910 Harmonizer on Dennis Davis’ drums, creating the huge, unnatural drum sound heard on tracks like “Sound and Vision,” years before that kind of processing became common in pop.
3. Berlin Era: Although often called the first album of Bowie’s “Berlin Trilogy,” much of Low was actually recorded at Château d’Hérouville in France, with additional work completed at Hansa Studios in West Berlin.
