1. Found in a Traffic Jam: Stephen Stills and Richie Furay were driving through Los Angeles when they spotted Neil Young's unmistakable black Pontiac hearse in traffic. They chased him down, reconnected, and within days Young and bassist Bruce Palmer joined them, creating the core of Buffalo Springfield.
2. Named After Road Equipment: The band took its name from a Buffalo-Springfield steamroller parked outside the Los Angeles house where several members were staying. What sounded like a mysterious Western name was actually copied straight off a piece of construction machinery.
3. Not a Vietnam Protest Song: “For What It's Worth” is often mistaken for a Vietnam War song, but Stephen Stills wrote it after witnessing clashes between young people and police over a Sunset Strip curfew in Los Angeles. The 1966 disturbances outside clubs like Pandora's Box turned a local youth protest into one of the era's most enduring protest songs.
