1970, The Prettiest Star was written for Bowie’s then-wife Angela and featured guitar work by Marc Bolan of T. Rex, foreshadowing the glam rock explosion that both artists would help define. Though it sold only a few hundred copies on its first run, the song became an artifact of Bowie’s transitional period between the Space Oddity era and the creation of Ziggy Stardust. Later re-recorded for Aladdin Sane, it demonstrates Bowie’s early experiments in blending personal songwriting with theatrical style, years before he achieved global recognition.
