Songs Written Through Illness: Stuart Murdoch spent much of his twenties dealing with ME/chronic fatigue syndrome, which left him isolated and often unable to work. During those years he wrote songs at home whenever he had enough energy, building the backlog of material that eventually became the foundation of Belle & Sebastian.
-
The Title Caused Real Awkwardness: The album title came from fellow Scottish band Arab Strap, whose heavy partying Murdoch watched from the sidelines while his illness often forced him to retreat early. Murdoch later admitted he never asked the band for permission to use their name, and Arab Strap were not especially thrilled about becoming the title of somebody else's album.
-
Recorded in a Church Hall: Murdoch was living in a church hall during this period, and Belle & Sebastian experimented with recording there by parking a mobile studio outside when the building's regular activities shut down for summer. Producer Tony Doogan remembered using the hall's natural reverb and recording with remarkably little compression or processing.
