Cultural Facts:
- Studio Lore: The Royal Scam is one of Steely Dan’s darker records, packed with sharp guitar solos, cynical storytelling, and the kind of spotless studio perfection Becker and Fagen obsessed over.
- Album Art: The strange skyscraper-animal cover was later disliked by the band, which fits the album’s uneasy mood even if they were never fully sold on it.
- Scene Ecology: “Kid Charlemagne” turned a Bay Area LSD-chemist legend into sleek jazz-rock noir, proving Steely Dan could make criminal weirdness sound ridiculously polished.
