Cultural Facts:

1. "Rooster" Was Written for His Dad: Jerry Cantrell wrote "Rooster" about his father, Jerry Cantrell Sr., a Vietnam veteran whose childhood nickname was Rooster. Cantrell called the song the start of the healing between the two of them after the damage the war caused.
2. Recording Began the Day the L.A. Riots Broke Out: The Dirt sessions started on the first day of the 1992 Los Angeles riots after the Rodney King verdict. Cantrell was in a store buying beer when a man walked in and started looting the place.
3. Not Who Fans Thought on the Cover: For years fans assumed the woman sinking into the cracked desert was Layne Staley's girlfriend Demri Parrott, but photographer Rocky Schenck revealed it was model and actress Mariah O'Brien. Staley called the image "revenge," since the title song was about someone who had buried him.
