Richard Pryor - Bicentennial N*gger
Title: Richard Pryor - Bicentennial N*gger
Year/Genre/Sub-Genre/City: 1976 / Comedy / Stand-Up Comedy / Peoria, Illinois
Matrix #: BS 2960
Condition: VG+ (LM)
Cultural Facts:
- Personal Struggle Pryor had already burned through his clean-TV persona by this point and rebuilt himself around raw material about race, addiction, and humiliation that many comics were too scared to touch.
- Media Narrative Released during the U.S. bicentennial, the title itself was a provocation, using national self-congratulation as a setup for Pryor’s harsher view of American life.
- Legal Trouble By the mid-70s Pryor’s offstage life was already turbulent, with drug use and arrests feeding the sense that his comedy was coming from real personal wreckage, not just stagecraft.
