Cultural Facts:

  1. The Movie Grew From an Invented Story: The film was based on Nik Cohn's June 7, 1976 New York magazine article "Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night," which was presented as reporting. In 1997 Cohn admitted he made up its hero, Vincent, basing him largely on a Shepherd's Bush mod he had known in 1960s London.
  2. The Opening Strut Was Shot in Bensonhurst: Tony Manero's walk to "Stayin' Alive," the first song on this record, was filmed under the elevated train on 86th Street in Brooklyn. He stops at Lenny's Pizza for two slices stacked on top of each other, and director John Badham had the song played on set so John Travolta could walk to the beat.
  3. The White Suit Came Off the Rack: Costume designer Patrizia von Brandenstein bought Travolta's white three-piece polyester suit at a men's shop on Kings Highway in Brooklyn. Film critic Gene Siskel bought it at a 1979 charity auction, and in 1995 it sold at Christie's for $145,500, a record at the time for a movie costume.
