They Left Ramsey Lewis Together: Bassist Eldee Young and drummer Isaac “Redd” Holt had spent years as the rhythm section behind Ramsey Lewis, including his breakthrough hit “The In Crowd.” In 1966 they struck out on their own, turning one of jazz’s most recognizable backing units into the Young-Holt Trio.

2. Jazz Musicians Made a Pop Hit: “Wack Wack” crossed far beyond jazz audiences, becoming a national hit with its stripped-down groove and playful vocal interjections. It was an early example of Chicago jazz musicians making something funky enough to land beside soul and R&B records on mainstream radio.
