Cultural Facts:
-
High-School Talent Show: The Marvelettes began as teenage students at Inkster High School calling themselves the Casinyets, joking that they “can’t sing yet.” A school talent contest earned them a Motown audition, but Berry Gordy told them to come back with an original song.
-
She Wrote the Hit, Then Left: Georgia Dobbins helped transform an unfinished blues idea into “Please Mr. Postman” after that audition, but left the group before it became a hit because of family circumstances and her father's opposition to show business. The song went on to become Motown's first No. 1 pop single.
-
Two-Day Album Rush: This second Marvelettes LP was essentially a crash project of covers of contemporary 1962 hits, reportedly recorded in only two days. The same material appeared as Smash Hits of '62 and on later The Marvelettes Sing pressings, some of which even misspelled the group's name as “Marveletts” on the cover.
