Cultural Facts:

1. Michael McDonald Changes the Band: When founding singer Tom Johnston's health problems forced him off the road, guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter recommended his former Steely Dan bandmate Michael McDonald as a replacement. McDonald's voice and keyboard style completely redirected the Doobies toward soul, jazz and R&B.
2. Health Forced a Reinvention: Johnston had been one of the band's main singers and songwriters, but severe stomach problems and exhaustion sidelined him during the mid-'70s. By Livin' on the Fault Line, the group had effectively rebuilt itself around McDonald rather than trying to imitate the earlier lineup.
3. Carly Simon Connection: Michael McDonald co-wrote "You Belong to Me" with Carly Simon, and the Doobie Brothers recorded it for this album before Simon released her own version. Her 1978 recording became a major hit, giving one of Livin' on the Fault Line's songs a second life outside the band.
