Condition: VG (LM) | Members: The Blues Brothers (N/A) | Producer: Bob Tischler
Cultural Facts:
Belushi Got Schooled in the Blues: While filming Animal House in Eugene, Oregon in 1977, John Belushi became friends with local bluesman Curtis Salgado. Salgado fed him records by artists like Bobby “Blue” Bland, Albert King and Guitar Slim, helping turn Belushi's casual interest into the obsession that became the Blues Brothers.
Comedy Band, Serious Musicians: Behind Jake and Elwood was an extraordinary real band, including Steve Cropper and Donald “Duck” Dunn from Booker T. & the M.G.'s, guitarist Matt “Guitar” Murphy and members of the Saturday Night Live band. The joke worked because the musicians treated soul and blues with complete seriousness.
From Bee Costumes to Black Suits: Belushi and Dan Aykroyd had already performed blues together on Saturday Night Live in 1976 while dressed as giant bees. By their official Blues Brothers debut in 1978, the bee costumes were gone and the black suits, hats and sunglasses had created two of comedy's most recognizable musical characters.
