Cultural Facts:

  1. Ringo Actually Quit: During the sessions, Ringo Starr became so frustrated and insecure about his playing that he temporarily left the band. The others sent messages telling him how much they valued him, and when he returned to Abbey Road, George Harrison had decorated his drum kit with flowers.
  2. Four Beatles, Separate Rooms: By 1968 the group was increasingly working apart, with different members recording in separate studios and contributing unevenly to each other's songs. The famous double album sounds wildly varied partly because it was made during a period when the Beatles were functioning less like one unit and more like four individual artists sharing a name.
  3. Eric Clapton Secretly Plays Lead: George Harrison brought his friend Eric Clapton into the studio to play the lead guitar solo on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Clapton was initially nervous about appearing on a Beatles record, but Harrison wanted an outsider in the room partly because he knew the band would behave better with a guest present.
