Cultural Facts:

1. Jonathan Cain Before Journey: Union Jacks was the first Babys album with keyboardist Jonathan Cain. Only a year later he left to join Journey, where he helped write enormous hits including “Don’t Stop Believin’,” making this record an important snapshot of him just before that career explosion.
2. New Lineup, New Year: Cain and bassist Ricky Phillips joined after Head First, and the rebuilt five-piece made its live debut at the Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve 1978. They soon hit the road opening for Alice Cooper before recording Union Jacks.
3. John Waite Came Back for the Band: Before joining The Babys, John Waite had moved to Cleveland, Ohio to play bass with another group. He returned to England specifically to audition for the new London project, eventually becoming its lead singer and later building a second major career with the solo hit “Missing You” and the band Bad English.
