Cultural Facts:

  1. Teenage Dimebag: Darrell Abbott, still billed as Diamond Darrell, was only 16 years old when Metal Magic was released. As a teenager he repeatedly entered Dallas-area guitar contests and won so often that he eventually stopped being allowed to compete, with some of the prize equipment helping build the young band's gear collection.

  2. Family Business: Pantera's earliest career was essentially an Abbott family operation. Darrell and Vinnie Paul's father Jerry Abbott was a country musician, recording engineer and studio owner who produced their early records, while the family helped create Metal Magic Records so the band could release albums without waiting for a major label.

  3. Before the Reinvention: This is a radically different Pantera from the group most people discovered through Cowboys from Hell. Terry Glaze was singing, the band wore teased hair and flashy stage clothes, and they were still teenagers absorbing Van Halen, Kiss and the early-'80s metal scene. Rather than hiding those records later, the albums show how long the Abbott brothers had already been working together before Pantera reinvented itself into one of the heaviest bands of the 1990s.
