1. Personal Struggle: Drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig was dealing with serious personal and health difficulties during the long Loveless sessions and could not perform normally through much of the recording. Kevin Shields sampled and reconstructed portions of Colm's drumming, allowing his playing to remain part of the record during a period when he was struggling.

2. Studio Lore: Loveless passed through numerous studios and engineers while Kevin Shields obsessively chased sounds he could hear in his head. The drawn-out process became financially notorious at Creation Records, where label boss Alan McGee later blamed the album's extraordinary cost for helping push the company toward financial trouble.

3. Guitar Lore: Shields created his famous “glide guitar” technique by holding the Jazzmaster or Jaguar tremolo arm while strumming, subtly bending entire chords in and out of tune. What sounded like layers of studio effects often began with the very physical act of moving the guitar's pitch by hand while playing.
