The Band Was Named After a Solo Album: Leslie West first gigged around New York as "Leslie West Mountain," a nod to his own big frame. When his 1969 solo album, produced by Cream producer Felix Pappalardi, came out titled Mountain, West and Pappalardi took the name for their new band.

Woodstock Was Only Their Fourth Gig: Mountain landed a Saturday night slot at Woodstock after just three West Coast shows, partly because their booking agent also handled Jimi Hendrix. They played "Theme For An Imaginary Western," written by Jack Bruce and Pete Brown, and "For Yasgur's Farm," still untitled at the time. Both songs are on this record.

A Whaling Tragedy Became a TV Theme: "Nantucket Sleighride (To Owen Coffin)" tells the true story of the whaleship Essex, sunk by a sperm whale in 1820, and the young sailor who drew the short straw in the lifeboat. The song's closing section became the theme to the British political TV show Weekend World from 1972 to 1988.
