1. Early Career: Before The Salt collects Buffett’s first two albums, Down To Earth and High Cumberland Jubilee, preserving the much folkier, more socially conscious music he made before developing his famous Key West persona.
2. Personal Struggle: Down To Earth was a commercial failure, reportedly selling only a few hundred copies. After Barnaby declined to release its follow-up, Buffett and producer Buzz Cason traveled to New York and were turned down by every label they approached.
3. Lost Album Lore: High Cumberland Jubilee was recorded in 1971, but Barnaby claimed the master tapes had been lost. They resurfaced and the album was finally released in 1976, after Buffett had already found success elsewhere.
