1. His Father Is on the Cover: The man photographed on the front of Song For My Father is Horace Silver's own father, John Tavares Silver. He had emigrated from the Cape Verde Islands, and Horace dedicated the title composition directly to him.

2. Cape Verde Meets Brazil: Silver said the title song combined two parts of his life, a rhythm inspired by a trip to Brazil and a melody influenced by old Cape Verdean Portuguese folk music he associated with his father's heritage.

3. Steely Dan Borrowed the Groove: A decade later, Steely Dan drew directly from the opening bass figure of “Song For My Father” when creating “Rikki Don't Lose That Number,” carrying Silver's hard-bop groove into one of the biggest pop songs of 1974.
