Title: Gustav Holst - The Planets
Year/Genre/Sub-Genre/City: 1973, Classical, Orchestral and Modern Classical, New York City, New York 8/26
Matrix #: M 31125
Condition: EX (LM) | Members: Leonard B (18' - 90') | Orchestra: New York Philharmonic
Cultural Facts:

  1. Recording Story: Leonard Bernstein recorded The Planets with the New York Philharmonic at Philharmonic Hall in December 1971, with the Camerata Singers supplying the distant wordless voices heard in “Neptune.”
  2. Personal Struggle: Holst suffered from neuritis that caused severe pain and weakness in his right arm, sometimes making writing and playing difficult enough that he relied on assistants to help prepare his scores.
  3. Fun Fact: Holst completed The Planets years before Pluto was discovered in 1930, and despite later suggestions that he add another movement, he never expanded the seven-part suite.
