Cultural Facts:

1. A '60s Musical Rebuilt for the '70s: Miloš Forman's 1979 film radically reworked the original Hair stage musical, changing characters, rearranging the story and giving Galt MacDermot's songs a new cinematic setting more than a decade after the show's Broadway breakthrough.
2. “Aquarius” Had Already Become a Pop Standard: Before the film appeared, “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” had become a massive No. 1 hit for The 5th Dimension in 1969, proving that songs from an experimental counterculture musical could cross straight into mainstream pop.
3. Galt MacDermot Came From Jazz, Not Rock: Despite writing one of the defining rock musicals, MacDermot was a classically trained composer with deep jazz, funk and African-music influences. That unusual background gave Hair its mix of rock, soul, gospel and rhythmic experimentation.
