Cultural Facts:

1. Trumpet Prodigy Before Teen Idol: Avalon was already performing professionally as a child trumpet player, appearing on The Jackie Gleason Show and making instrumental records for an RCA subsidiary years before anyone marketed him as a pop singer.
2. Future Stars in the Same Neighborhood Band: As a teenager, Avalon played trumpet with Philadelphia group Rocco and the Saints. Their drummer was Robert Ridarelli, who soon became another major teen idol under the name Bobby Rydell.
3. The Album That Started It: Frankie Avalon was his first LP and arrived just as “DeDe Dinah” was turning him into a national teenage star. Chancellor Records was still a tiny Philadelphia label, and Avalon's rapid success helped establish the company before it repeated the teen-idol formula with Fabian.
