  1. Poets Before a Band: The five members met as students at BIMM, a music college in Dublin, and bonded over poetry before they had songs. They self-published two poetry chapbooks, Vroom, inspired by the Beat poets, and Winding, inspired by Irish writers like Kavanagh, Joyce and Yeats.
  2. Named After a Godfather Crooner: The band took its name from Johnny Fontane, the singer in The Godfather. They tacked on D.C., for Dublin City, after finding out there was already a band in Los Angeles called The Fontaines.
  3. A Mattress Vocal Booth in Palermo: The music was cut mostly at Decoy Studios in Suffolk, but Grian Chatten's vocals were recorded with James Ford in a makeshift home studio in Palermo, Sicily, with a booth built from mattresses and cushions. Rosalia sent back her part on Where Is Gone? within 48 hours, recorded while she was on tour in the US.
