Matrix #: PAS6004

Cultural Facts:

1. A Soundtrack Before the Superstar Years: Friends was written for the 1971 film of the same name, just before Elton John became a full-scale international superstar. The title song became a hit and helped keep his momentum building between his early breakthrough albums.
2. Bernie Taupin Was Still Writing the Words: As with much of Elton's classic early work, Bernie Taupin supplied the lyrics while Elton composed the music, continuing the partnership that had already produced songs like “Your Song.”
3. The Film Is Mostly Forgotten, the Record Isn't: The movie faded from public memory, but the soundtrack remained collectible because it captures Elton in a transitional moment between intimate singer-songwriter material and the much bigger pop sound that would dominate the 1970s.
