1. From Homeless Teen to Apollo Winner: After her mother's death, a teenage Ella Fitzgerald went through an unstable period that included reform school and homelessness. In 1934 she entered an amateur contest at Harlem's Apollo Theater, switched from dancing to singing at the last minute, and won.

2. Joe Pass Rebuilt His Life: Pass lost much of the 1950s to heroin addiction and spent time in jail before entering the Synanon rehabilitation community in California. After getting sober, he rebuilt his career and became one of jazz's most respected guitarists.

3. Nothing to Hide Behind: Fitzgerald & Pass... Again strips the music down almost completely to Ella's voice and Joe's guitar. With no rhythm section or orchestra, Pass had to supply harmony, rhythm and accompaniment by himself while Fitzgerald had enormous freedom with phrasing and tempo.
