Title: Dr. John - In The Right Place
Year/Genre/Sub-Genre/City: 1973, New Orleans Funk, R&B, Swamp Rock, New Orleans, Louisiana 10/26
Matrix #: SD 7018
Condition: VG (LM) | Members: Dr. J (40' - 19') | Producer: Allen Toussaint
Cultural Facts:

1. A Gunshot Changed His Instrument: Before becoming Dr. John, Mac Rebennack was primarily a guitarist. After his left ring finger was badly injured by a gunshot during an altercation, he shifted his focus toward piano and keyboards, changing the entire direction of his career.
2. The Meters Were His Backing Band: In The Right Place paired Dr. John with New Orleans funk masters The Meters, giving songs like “Right Place, Wrong Time” their tight, syncopated groove. Allen Toussaint produced and arranged the sessions.
3. Dr. John Started as a Character: Rebennack originally created the flamboyant “Dr. John the Night Tripper” persona for another singer. When that performer became unavailable, he stepped into the role himself, combining New Orleans folklore, voodoo imagery and psychedelic stage theater into a character that eventually became his permanent identity.
