Cultural Facts:

  1. The Title Became Uncomfortably Accurate: Belly Up! struggled commercially compared with the band's earlier records, and within a year Dr. Hook was in serious financial trouble. Dennis Locorriere later joked that if the band finished a tour with money, they would “party into the red,” and the group filed for bankruptcy in 1974.
  2. Shel Silverstein Was Still Everywhere: Several songs were written by Shel Silverstein, the children's author, cartoonist and songwriter who had become one of Dr. Hook's most important creative partners. His oddball humor and storytelling helped define the band's early personality.
  3. Recorded in New York With a Bigger Cast: The album was cut at CBS Studio in New York with the core band joined by extra guitars, violin, horns and backing singers, giving songs like “The Wonderful Soup Stone” and “Roland the Roadie and Gertrude the Groupie” a fuller, more theatrical sound.
