1. Sleeping on Cornish Beaches: In 1963, 16-year-old Donovan and his friend Gypsy Dave hitchhiked to St Ives in Cornwall chasing the beatnik life. They busked and slept rough on beaches, two years before "Catch the Wind" made him a star.
2. A Childhood Polio Survivor: Donovan caught polio as a small child in Glasgow, leaving his right leg thinner and shorter and giving him a limp. He has said the illness made him feel like an outsider growing up, and in later years he joined Rotary's campaign to end polio.
3. The Great Banana Hoax: In early 1967, as "Mellow Yellow" sang about an "electrical banana," an underground rumor spread from Berkeley that smoking dried banana peels could get you high. Country Joe and the Fish handed out banana joints, and the craze got so big the FDA tested the peels and found nothing in them.
