1. Family Ties: Thomas Bangalter grew up with dance music unusually close to home. His father, Daniel Vangarde, was already a successful songwriter and producer behind European disco and pop records, meaning Thomas learned about studios and the strange mechanics of the music business before Daft Punk existed.
2. Robot Lore: Daft Punk explained their robot identities with a deliberately ridiculous story: on September 9, 1999, their studio supposedly exploded while they were working, and when they regained consciousness they had become robots. Instead of admitting the helmets were simply branding, they created mythology and stayed in character for decades.
3. Childhood Hero: Discovery became the basis for Interstella 5555, an animated film created with Japanese artist Leiji Matsumoto, whose work Thomas and Guy-Manuel had loved as children. Becoming famous eventually allowed them to hire one of their childhood heroes to visually build the world inside their record.
