Child Punk: Harley Flanagan was already playing drums in the Stimulators while he was barely a teenager, entering New York punk clubs at an age when most kids were still worrying about middle school. By the time Cro-Mags existed, he had already spent years around the first generation of the downtown punk scene.

2. Survival Story: John Joseph spent a brutal childhood moving through foster homes and institutions and later lived rough on the streets of New York. He has credited the Hare Krishna community with feeding him and giving him structure during a period when he had very little, which helps explain why spiritual ideas became so deeply entangled with Cro-Mags’ hardcore.

3. Band Warfare: The relationship between Joseph and Flanagan became one of hardcore’s longest and ugliest internal feuds, involving competing versions of the band’s history and years of public hostility. That makes live documents from periods when both men were actually sharing a stage feel especially strange in hindsight.
