Cultural Facts:

  1. Named After Stalin: McDonald's parents had both been members of the Communist Party, and they named their son Joseph partly in honor of Joseph Stalin. During the Red Scare, his father was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee and lost his telephone-company job, making Cold War politics part of Joe's childhood long before he became a protest singer.
  2. The Anti-War Singer Was a Veteran: At 17, McDonald enlisted in the U.S. Navy and spent more than three years serving, including time as an air traffic controller in Japan. That experience gave unusual weight to the anti-Vietnam songs that later made him one of the counterculture's most recognizable voices.
  3. Future Studio Royalty: Rock And Roll Music From The Planet Earth was McDonald's first album built heavily around Los Angeles studio musicians. The sessions included future super-producer David Foster, guitarist Jay Graydon and brothers Jeff and Mike Porcaro, putting the Berkeley protest veteran in the room with musicians who would soon help define polished late-'70s and '80s pop.
