Year/Genre/Sub-Genre/City: 1985, Comedy, Parody, Novelty, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada 10/26
Matrix #: MCA 5677
Condition: VG (LM) | Members: Cheech M (46' - ), Tommy C (38' - ) | Producer: Peter Kaye
Cultural Facts:

1. Born in a Vancouver Club: Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong first connected in Vancouver, where Chong was running a nightclub and performing with an improv comedy group. Their chemistry eventually became Cheech & Chong, turning two very different backgrounds into one of the biggest counterculture comedy acts of the 1970s.
2. Bruce Springsteen Parody Became a Movie: “Born in East L.A.” spoofed Springsteen's “Born in the U.S.A.” by telling the story of a Mexican-American mistakenly deported to Mexico. The song became a hit, and Cheech later expanded the idea into the 1987 film Born in East L.A., which he wrote, directed and starred in without Chong.
3. The Breakup Was Already Showing: The companion Get Out Of My Room video was built around a mock-documentary in which Cheech desperately wants to make music videos while Chong would rather avoid the whole production. Chong's reluctance was partly real, and the joke eerily mirrored their relationship as the duo split shortly after the album.
