Title: Carlos Santana - Havana Moon
Year/Genre/Sub-Genre/City: 1983,  Blues Rock, Tex-Mex, San Francisco, California 10/26
Matrix #: 38642
Condition: VG+ Sounds great (TC) | Members: Carlos S (47' - ) | Producer: Jerry Wexler, Barry Beckett
Cultural Facts:

  1. His Father Sings on the Album: Carlos brought his father, José Santana, into the studio to sing “Vereda Tropical,” a song Carlos remembered hearing his father serenade his mother with after an argument. It turned Havana Moon into one of the most personal family documents in Santana's catalog.
  2. The Fabulous Thunderbirds Connection: Much of the album paired Santana with members of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, including Jimmie Vaughan and Kim Wilson. The sessions pushed Carlos toward raw blues and Tex-Mex territory instead of simply repeating the polished Latin-rock formula associated with his band.
  3. Willie Nelson Goes to Mexico: Willie Nelson sings lead on “They All Went to Mexico,” backed by Santana, Booker T. Jones, Flaco Jiménez and members of the Santana rhythm section. The unlikely lineup brought together Mexican-American rock, country, soul and Tex-Mex musicians on a song that treats “Mexico” as a metaphor for death and reunion.
