1. Road Life: Braid spent so much time touring that much of Frame & Canvas was effectively shaped in vans, rehearsal stops and the shared life of people constantly traveling together. Members have described that period as one where they were becoming tighter simply because they were living the band almost every day.
2. Hero Becomes Producer: They recorded with J. Robbins of Jawbox at Inner Ear Studios, someone the members already admired from the other side of the stage. Going from young fans of Robbins’ band to having him behind the console on their own record was a huge psychological step for them.
3. Midwest Network: Braid were part of a fiercely interconnected 1990s scene where bands like The Promise Ring, Rainer Maria, The Get Up Kids and others toured together, traded floors to sleep on and shared tiny labels. What later got packaged as “Midwest emo” originally looked a lot more like friends keeping each other’s bands alive.
