Cultural Facts:

  1. The Title Had Two Meanings: The IVth Crusade was Bolt Thrower's fourth proper studio album, but the title also refers to the Fourth Crusade and the 1204 sack of Constantinople. The cover uses Eugène Delacroix's massive painting The Entry of the Crusaders in Constantinople.
  2. The Band Started in a Pub Toilet: Guitarists Gavin Ward and Barry Thomson came up with the idea for Bolt Thrower in a Coventry pub bathroom during a hardcore punk show in 1986. Their earliest influences included Discharge, Crass and Slayer before the band evolved into its crushing death-metal sound.
  3. John Peel Helped Change Their Life: BBC DJ John Peel heard an early Bolt Thrower demo and invited the unknown band to record a session for his radio show in 1988. They ultimately recorded three Peel Sessions, and bassist Jo Bench later said Peel was one of the rare people she could genuinely say had changed her life.
