A Monkee Produced Bert Jansch: After Pentangle broke up, Charisma boss Tony Stratton Smith paired Jansch with former Monkee Michael Nesmith. Nesmith brought a distinctly West Coast country feel to Jansch's acoustic music and Jansch later called L.A. Turnaround one of his most important albums.
-
His First Pedal Steel Experience: Legendary steel guitarist Red Rhodes played throughout the album, and Jansch later said he had never worked with a pedal steel player before. Nesmith helped arrange the interaction between the two musicians, creating one of the record's defining sounds.
-
“Needle of Death” Returned: Jansch revisited “Needle of Death,” a song he originally wrote after the heroin-related death of a friend. Neil Young later cited the song as a major influence, and its melody helped inspire Young's “The Needle and the Damage Done.”
