Cultural Facts:

1. Beatles Producer, Different Band: Hearts was produced by George Martin, best known for his work with the Beatles. America had already become successful before working with him, but Martin helped refine their harmonies and arrangements into the polished mid-'70s sound heard on this album.
2. Three Americans Raised Overseas: Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek were all sons of U.S. Air Force personnel stationed in England. The band formed while attending school near London, giving a group named America an unusually transatlantic origin story.
3. “Sister Golden Hair” Was Personal: Gerry Beckley wrote “Sister Golden Hair,” one of the album's biggest songs, from the perspective of someone who cared deeply about a relationship but wasn't ready to fully commit. The song became America's second No. 1 single in the United States.
